Royal Greenland Launches 100% Recyclable Packaging for Frozen Seafood

15.01.2025

Royal Greenland has introduced a new 100% recyclable packaging solution for its 15Lbs cod and halibut boxes, marking a significant step in its commitment to sustainability

Developed in collaboration with Schur, this innovative solution replaces PE-coated cardboard with a water-based coating that meets the specific demands of frozen seafood packaging.

Schur, a leading provider of total packaging solutions, combines innovative technology, logistics, sustainable materials, and expertise to create end-to-end value for its partners. Their collaboration with Royal Greenland has been instrumental in developing a solution tailored to the specific needs of the seafood industry.

The new packaging is already in use aboard Royal Greenland’s trawlers, delivering strong results. According to Lene Vognsen, Innovation Director at Royal Greenland, this development aligns with the company’s long-term goals for sustainability without compromising functionality.

The seafood industry presents unique challenges for packaging. The boxes need to withstand plate freezing and ensure that neither the product nor the box sticks during the process. By working closely with Schur, we’ve created a recyclable alternative that performs just as well as traditional PE-coated cardboard,” Vognsen explains.

Jørgen Møller, Royal Greenland’s packaging specialist, led the technical aspects of the project. “The coating had to be tailored to meet both functional and environmental requirements,” says Møller. “It dissolves during recycling and can be included in the normal recycling process for cellulose materials. Achieving this while maintaining operational efficiency was key.”

The switch to the new packaging offers several advantages:

  • 100% plastic-free, recyclable, and sustainable: A major step forward in the green transition.
  • Improved print quality: Printing directly on cardboard, without a plastic layer, enhances the overall appearance.
  • Faster delivery times: The lead time for packaging materials has been reduced by 14 days.
  • Greater order flexibility: The supplier can source raw materials more efficiently without PE coatings.

While the recyclable coating is currently used exclusively for 15Lbs cod and halibut boxes, the team is exploring its potential application across other packaging types.

“The green transition is here, and this is just the beginning. We’re proud to take this step toward smarter, more sustainable packaging solutions,” says Vognsen.

Royal Greenland’s recyclable packaging represents a meaningful step in balancing sustainability with the operational demands of the seafood industry. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to creating greener solutions.
