Additional quota for inshore cod fishery in Greenland
An increase in the original quota of 8000t for Atlantic cod has essential value for the coastal fishery in Western Greenland, where more than 300 employees at Royal Greenland's factories and a vast number of local fishermen are now able to continue working.
The fishery for cod has so far had a great season with a large number in the waters surrounding West Greenland. The season was first closed on the 5th of October as the original quota of 25.000t was fished. But because of the good season and the rising number of Atlantic cod in the water around Greenland, an additional quota of 8000t has been granted to the fishery.
Operational Manager at Royal Greenland Sten Sørensen says;
"With the additional quota we expect the production to continue throughout November. But I am unsure whether the additional quota is enough to employ the fishery for all of December as well."
Financial importance for the cod fishery
The extra quota is – regardless of its duration – of great importance especially for the employees and the local fishermen. Sten Sørensen continues;
"The additional quota has the greatest impact for our factories in Qasigiannguit, Kangaatsiaq, Sisimiut og Maniiitsoq where Royal Greenland produces cod fillets, but it is also essential for continuing production of salted cod and dried cod as well as landing cod for freezing in smaller settlements. This makes the extra quota significant not only for Royal Greenland but also for our employees and suppliers."
The extra quota has an estimated value of 25-30 million DKK for the local fishermen, who supply Royal Greenland.
