Reusable scantainers cuts CO2 emissions in half

09.03.2017

By changing the way pallets with goods going out of Greenland for further processing elsewhere are packed, Royal Greenland has managed to reduce CO2 emissions by more than half, while saving money at the same time.

In the past, shrimp from Royal Greenland's shrimp factories in Ilulissat and Sisimiut, Western Greenland going to industry customers or for further processing or packaging elsewhere, were packed in 5 kg bags, put together two and two in 10 kg boxes, which were then stacked on a pallet. Later on, the 10 kg boxes were replaced by a so called scantainer - one, very large, single-use cardboard box.

However, through a project carried out in cooperation between production in Greenland, the Corporate Sustainability department and Royal Greenland's packaging specialist, it has now been possible to implement reusable cardboard scantainers. It is estimated that each scantainer can be reused 15-20 times, which will result in a 43% reduction in packaging use over the course of 4 years. In addition, the new wraps are lighter than the old ones and as all packaging used in Greenland has to be imported by ship, less packaging means reduced CO2 emissions as well as cost savings for Royal Greenland.
