The biggest trawler in the history of Royal Greenland was delivered 2nd December to Royal Greenland by the Spanish ship yard Astilleros de Muruerta in Bilbao
Royal Greenland’s Avataq is the second ship to be delivered from the ship yard Astilleros de Muruerta in Bilbao and the ship is the largest ever in the history of Royal Greenland’s fleet. Measuring 82,30 meter from stern to bow and 18 meters from side to side, Avataq is an impressive vessel with a main engine featuring 10.000 HP (MAN engine 9L32/44Common Rail). Avataq has prior to delivery conducted a successful trial fishery off the coast of Bilbao in Spain and while the Royal Greenland crew get acquainted onboard, the finishing touches and final checks are conducted;
The ship has been delivered, but both shipyard and other technicians are still working on completing the ship, so we can set course towards Greenland. We expect to arrive january 3rd, so we can begin fishing around January 4th, Jogvan Trondarson, captain onboard Avataq, says.
Designed for the fishery of the future
Avataq is not only big – it is also the first vessel in Greenland to fish with three trawls simultaneously. To haul in the trawls, Avataq has 4 motorized trawl winches and a factory on board to handle the catch of Greenland halibut or cold-water prawns, the vessel is designed to process. With a cargo hold of 2850 cubic meters, there is room onboard for longer fishing trips both in terms of distance and time.
We expect to begin fishing for prawns in the beginning of January and we will, during the first fishing trip, welcome 12 technicians on board, who will work on adjusting the technical equipment, Jogvan Trondarson continues.
Avataq will house 30 crew members and sail in Greenlandic waters as well as the Barents Sea. The ship is designed as a home away from home with mainly single cabins, cozy living rooms and art on the walls.
The vessel will be baptized at and official ceremony in Nuuk on January 18th.
